THE WEBSITE WORKSHOP

Are images slowing your Squarespace site?

Photography may be central to the business, but every image does not need to arrive at full size on the first screen. The goal is useful visual quality with sensible delivery.

Check where the delay comes from

Identify the image that occupies the main visible area and compare its delivered dimensions with the space it fills. Review long galleries and embedded media too. A slow page may combine image weight with third-party code, so avoid treating all performance problems as compression problems.

Preserve the visual job of the image

A portfolio detail shot and a small decorative thumbnail serve different purposes. Resize and organise media around that purpose. Recheck the page at mobile and desktop sizes to make sure the crop, clarity and reading order still work.

A practical checklist

  • Identify the main visible image.
  • Use suitable source dimensions.
  • Remove redundant gallery content.
  • Check mobile crops after changes.

What to do next

Start with one important page and one clearly defined problem. Keep a record of the original behaviour, make a controlled change and check the result. If you are not comfortable changing the site, the record gives a developer a useful starting point and makes the scope easier to agree.

A CHD website check can add public-page evidence to that conversation. The free result includes a score and up to three findings. The full $29 teardown includes the measured findings, practical guides, a private report and a PDF. Any repair work is reviewed and quoted before payment.
