THE WEBSITE WORKSHOP
Repair broken internal links without creating more confusion
A missing destination interrupts the visitor’s journey. Fix the actual link and consider whether the old URL needs a sensible replacement.
1. Confirm the response
Open the flagged destination and record the returned status. Temporary server trouble and a genuine missing page are different problems.
2. Find where the link appears
Check navigation, body copy, buttons and reusable sections. A broken link in a shared component may appear across many pages.
3. Choose the right destination
Link directly to the most relevant live page. If an old URL has a clear successor, consider an appropriate permanent redirect.
4. Test the complete route
Confirm that the new destination explains the expected service or content. Redirecting every missing page to the homepage can leave the original confusion unresolved.
When to ask for help
Stop if the change affects a critical workflow, requires access you do not have or produces a result you cannot explain. Keep the original evidence and a restorable backup. A short, well-defined repair request is easier to review than a series of speculative changes.
