THE WEBSITE WORKSHOP
Shopify theme bloat: repair the theme or replace it?
A theme replacement is a project, not a performance toggle. Before starting one, separate unnecessary additions from limitations in the underlying theme.
Ask what the current theme can still do well
If the templates, product options and editing experience fit the store, removing low-value features may be enough. Review the assets and sections that create measurable cost. Preserve the features that help customers choose and buy.
Price the migration honestly
A new theme can mean rebuilding templates, testing app compatibility, checking accessibility and retraining the people who maintain the store. Include that work in the comparison. A lower theme purchase price does not automatically mean a lower total project cost.
A practical checklist
- List the features customers actually use.
- Measure representative templates.
- Check theme support and update history.
- Compare repair scope with full migration work.
What to do next
Start with one important page and one clearly defined problem. Keep a record of the original behaviour, make a controlled change and check the result. If you are not comfortable changing the site, the record gives a developer a useful starting point and makes the scope easier to agree.
A CHD website check can add public-page evidence to that conversation. The free result includes a score and up to three findings. The full $29 teardown includes the measured findings, practical guides, a private report and a PDF. Any repair work is reviewed and quoted before payment.
